Business property

The practice depends on more than an office lease.

Engineering businesses can rely on valuable equipment both in the office and in the field. The policy needs to reflect where those assets are used, stored and transported.

  • Computers, monitors and office contents
  • Laptops, tablets and portable devices
  • Surveying, measurement and testing equipment
  • Specialist tools and technical instruments
  • Equipment temporarily taken to client or project sites
  • Selected additional costs following insured damage

What shapes the cover

Location and use can matter as much as value.

A useful equipment schedule describes not only what the business owns, but where each item travels and how it is protected.

01Replacement values and maximum value at one location

02Equipment used away from the main premises

03Storage in vehicles, homes and temporary sites

04Theft protections and unattended-vehicle conditions

05Fragile, calibrated or highly specialised instruments

06Hired, leased or borrowed equipment

07Overseas use and territorial limits

08Dependence on assets for ongoing revenue

Cover options

Match the policy to where the assets work.

01 / Premises

Office contents

Selected cover for furniture, computers, equipment and other business contents at insured locations.

02 / Portable assets

Equipment away from the office

Selected cover for declared portable items while taken to meetings, inspections and project sites.

03 / Technical equipment

Surveying and testing gear

Specialist instruments may need individual values, clear descriptions and appropriate accidental-damage terms.

04 / Continuity

Business interruption

Selected loss of income or increased operating costs following insured property damage.

Cover depends on the insured events, locations, sums insured, territorial limits, excesses and exclusions. Portable and specialist equipment should not be assumed covered unless it is included appropriately.

Important details

Small policy conditions can make a large difference.

Review how the policy treats assets in transit, temporary locations and common loss scenarios.

  • Replacement cost, indemnity value and underinsurance provisions
  • Accidental damage versus specified insured events
  • Theft following forcible entry and security requirements
  • Unattended-vehicle restrictions and overnight storage
  • Flood, storm and other location-specific hazards
  • Mechanical or electronic breakdown limitations
  • Cyber events, registered vehicles and drones requiring separate consideration

Common questions

Business equipment cover, explained clearly.

Not necessarily. Portable cover, territorial limits and the declared use of the equipment should be checked. A premises-only policy may not respond at a client or project site.

Cover often depends on the vehicle, time, location, security and evidence of forcible entry. Unattended or overnight vehicle exclusions are common and should be reviewed carefully.

The appropriate basis depends on the wording, but current replacement cost can differ significantly from the original purchase price or accounting value. Confirm the valuation basis before setting sums insured.

Potentially, where the interruption results from insured property damage and the policy includes suitable cover. Indemnity periods, insured gross profit and additional costs need to be selected carefully.

Do not assume it is. The hire agreement, responsibility for damage, maximum values and the policy’s treatment of property in the business’s custody should be checked.
