Professional Indemnity Insurance does not replace Public Liability Insurance.
An engineering consultancy may need Public Liability Insurance where its activities create a risk of causing bodily injury or property damage outside the provision of professional advice.
This can include situations where engineers:
- attend construction sites
- inspect buildings or equipment
- work at client premises
- conduct surveys or testing
- operate from leased offices
- attend exhibitions or events
- have clients or visitors attend their workplace
Clients, landlords and principal contractors may also require evidence of Public Liability Insurance.
A consultancy that spends most of its time working from an office can still have Public Liability exposure.
The appropriate cover will depend on the firm’s activities and where its staff work.
