The ACT Professional Engineers Registration Scheme commenced on 6 March 2025.
Registration is required for professional engineering services in the prescribed areas of:
- civil
- structural
- electrical
- mechanical
- fire safety
The scheme can apply to services provided in the ACT and to services provided from outside the ACT for an ACT project or purpose.
There are exceptions, including work carried out under the direction and oversight of a registered professional engineer who takes responsibility for the service, and work performed in accordance with a prescriptive standard.
Holding a specific Professional Indemnity policy is not itself a condition of registration. However, the ACT Code of Practice requires registered professional engineers to take reasonable steps to be covered by adequate Professional Indemnity Insurance appropriate to the services they provide.
Mutual recognition or automatic mutual recognition may assist interstate engineers, but the available pathway depends on the engineer’s existing registration and scope of practice.
Engineers should check the ACT requirements before commencing work rather than assuming interstate registration automatically gives unrestricted ACT registration.
