Tasmania engineer registration operates through the state’s building provider licensing framework for specified building services work.
Engineer licence classes include:
- Fire Safety
- Building Services
- Civil
Applicants and renewing licence holders must provide evidence of current Professional Indemnity Insurance. The current minimum PI requirement is $1 million.
The insurance certificate should reflect the professional services being undertaken and remain current while the licence is held.
Tasmanian licensing should not be treated as a general registration requirement for every engineer in every discipline. The relevant issue is whether the work falls within one of the regulated building provider classes.
Engineering firms working in Tasmania should check:
- the licence class relevant to the work
- whether the individual engineer must hold the licence
- whether the firm’s insurance arrangement satisfies the PI requirement
- any additional client or contractual insurance requirements
The statutory minimum should also not be assumed to be the appropriate commercial PI limit for every engineering business.
