Engineering work in Canada needs to be assessed by province or territory rather than treated as one national licensing regime.
Engineering is regulated by provincial and territorial engineering regulators. The requirements for practising, licensing and use of professional titles therefore depend on where the work is being undertaken.
Insurance considerations can include:
- whether the Australian PI policy includes Canadian exposure
- the province or territory involved
- governing law and dispute jurisdiction
- local licensing requirements
- project values and client type
- whether the policy groups Canadian exposure with USA exposure for underwriting or jurisdictional purposes
Some Australian insurers may require specific approval for Canadian work even where the policy otherwise has broad international wording.
The project should therefore be disclosed before work begins, and the relevant provincial or territorial regulator should be checked separately from the insurance position.
