Working for a multinational client can create overseas insurance exposure even where the engineering firm is engaged through an Australian office.
Check:
- which client entity signs the contract
- where the project is located
- where the engineering services will be used
- governing law and dispute jurisdiction
- whether the contract applies group-wide
- whether overseas affiliates can make claims
- the required Professional Indemnity limits
A contract with an Australian subsidiary does not necessarily mean the exposure is purely Australian if the work supports overseas operations or allows claims to be brought elsewhere.
Multinational clients may also impose global insurance requirements that are broader than the engineer’s existing policy.
The insurer should understand the actual project and contractual structure rather than relying only on the client’s Australian address.
