South Australia does not currently have a general mandatory registration scheme for professional engineers.
The South Australian Government has previously announced a proposed registration scheme. The initial phase is intended to focus on:
- structural engineers
- fire safety engineers
- work on buildings classified as Medium, High or Very High Building Complexity under the National Construction Code
Until a mandatory scheme commences, engineers in South Australia may still encounter other accreditation, licensing, contractual or Professional Indemnity requirements depending on the work they perform.
Some building and development assessment roles sit within separate accreditation frameworks and can carry their own insurance requirements.
Engineering firms should therefore consider:
- the role being performed
- whether another statutory accreditation applies
- the contractual insurance requirements
- the Professional Indemnity cover appropriate to the services provided
Because the proposed registration regime has not yet commenced, the current position should be checked before relying on this page for a new project or registration decision.
For the South Australian Government’s published information on the proposed scheme, see the professional engineers registration consultation page.
