Business travel

Site visits create a different vehicle profile.

Engineering vehicles may move between offices, client premises and active project sites. The declared use, drivers, locations and items carried should reflect how the vehicles actually operate.

  • Client meetings and metropolitan travel
  • Inspections and active construction sites
  • Regional, remote or interstate project work
  • Transporting laptops, tools and technical equipment
  • Vehicles shared between employees
  • Occasional private use and overnight garaging

What shapes the terms

The vehicle is only part of the risk.

Insurers also consider who drives, where the vehicle travels, how it is used and the business’s claims history.

Cover options

Choose protection that reflects the vehicle’s role.

01 / Vehicle damage

Comprehensive cover

Selected cover for accidental damage, theft and damage caused to other vehicles or property.

02 / Third parties

Third-party property damage

Selected liability for damage caused by the insured vehicle to another person’s vehicle or property.

03 / Continuity

Hire vehicle options

Selected hire-car costs following an insured event, subject to limits, availability and policy conditions.

04 / Additional benefits

Glass and accessories

Windscreen, fitted accessories and other benefits may be included or available as optional extensions.

Motor cover depends on the policy type, agreed or market value, drivers, use, excesses, exclusions and endorsements. Compulsory third-party injury arrangements vary by jurisdiction and are separate from property damage cover.

Important boundaries

The vehicle policy may not cover everything carried inside it.

Check the interaction between motor, equipment and liability policies rather than assuming one policy responds to every loss.

  • Tools, laptops and specialist equipment may require separate cover
  • Unattended-vehicle theft conditions can be restrictive
  • Personal motor policies may limit or exclude some business use
  • Unlisted or younger drivers may attract higher excesses or restrictions
  • Unroadworthy, overloaded or improperly used vehicles may not be covered
  • Hire vehicles, employee-owned vehicles and grey-fleet arrangements need review
  • Drone and aviation equipment require separate consideration

Potentially, but the insurer should be told about the business use. A private-use policy may restrict certain work travel, high kilometres, equipment carriage or regular site attendance.

Usually not automatically. Motor cover primarily insures the vehicle and specified liabilities. Portable tools, laptops and specialist equipment may need separate equipment cover.

That depends on the policy. Age, licensing, driver history and named-driver conditions may apply, and additional excesses can apply to younger or unlisted drivers.

Not always. Hire-car cover may be optional, restricted to certain insured events or limited by daily and total amounts. Check the policy before relying on it.

The employee should confirm appropriate business use with their own insurer. The engineering business should also review its travel policies, reimbursements, safety responsibilities and any potential contingent exposure.
